As residents of the Bay Area get ready to bundle up, the National Weather Service San Francisco has issued a Frost Advisory effective from 11 p.m. tonight until 9 a.m. Wednesday for the North Bay Interior Valleys, including the coldest regions in the Sonoma Valley. According to the NWS San Francisco, temperatures are expected to dip as low as 32 degrees. The advisory highlights particularly hazardous conditions for sensitive populations, such as unhoused individuals. There's an ample chance that additional Frost Advisories will need to be issued for the upcoming nights.
Thursday will bring another round of rain before giving way to a dry and cold weekend. Though weaker than the recent atmospheric river event, the incoming weather system still aims to deliver moderate rainfall. "The current temperatures are roughly 10 degrees colder than 24 hours ago," the National Weather Service noted, expecting the colder air mass to be noticeable. Even though increasing cloud cover might keep temperatures slightly warmer than this morning, preparations should be made to anticipate the cold.
The rain is not the only element to note, as windy conditions are also on the horizon. The NWS Area Forecast Discussion detailed, "The wind will still be noticeable, with SW winds 10-20 mph and gusts up to 35 mph Thursday evening." As the system moves in on Thursday, it will bring with it rain and another shot of colder air, causing snow levels to drop to around 3,000 ft and potentially dusting some of the higher elevations with snow.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the real concern shifts to cold morning temperatures. "Saturday morning will start roughly 10 degrees colder than Friday morning," NWS San Francisco warns, projecting inland areas to fall into the low 30s. The area will be enveloped by widespread frost advisories, with daytime highs struggling into the mid to upper 50s. However, the skies are set to clear gradually, and residents can look forward to more stable weather and abundant sunshine through the middle of next week before the next round of rain is expected to arrive around Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the marine forecast from NWS San Francisco advises that winds and waves will ease today, providing some respite for mariners after the passing cold front. But as the next atmospheric river aims, stronger winds will regenerate over the waters by early Thursday, persisting into the weekend and bringing another bout of rain from Thursday into Friday for coastal waters.
