An officer-involved shooting in Clayton County is currently under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), following a multi-county car chase that ended in violence. According to a GBI news release, the incident occurred around 7:00 p.m., when deputies from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office identified a black Jeep allegedly involved in a string of vehicle break-ins and attempted to pull it over. Instead of complying, the Jeep’s driver initiated a pursuit.

The preliminary details provided by the GBI indicate that during the chase, the passenger of the Jeep indiscriminately fired a weapon at pursuing officers. The high-speed pursuit continued with additional law enforcement agencies joining, including the Clayton County Sheriff's Office. Subsequently, in the 9400 block of Tara Blvd, the suspect vehicle collided with several others before coming to a halt. The driver then fled on foot across multiple traffic lanes before being apprehended by the police. In an unfolding altercation, an officer discharged their firearm, injuring the driver who was then transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Initially, the GBI release incorrectly identified the man involved in the shooting. Following the error, the Bureau issued an update stating, "We are actively working to determine the man’s identity." No further information has been provided regarding the man's identification, and updates will be released on the GBI’s official website.

No officers were hurt in the incident, but the use of deadly force has raised concerns about police pursuit policies and the decisions made during chases. The GBI will conduct an independent investigation and submit their findings to the Clayton County District Attorney's Office for review to ensure a thorough examination of the incident.
