Assistant Senate Minority Leader Andrea Hunley has raised concerns after the Senate voted in favor of Senate Bill 518, legislation that she says promises to rattle the bedrock of Indiana's school systems. According to Indiana Senate Democrats, the bill would reallocate property tax revenue, channeling funds from public-school districts with over 500 charter school students into the coffers of said charter schools, simultaneously causing a reduction in their state funding.
In report by the Indiana Senate Democrats, Hunley noted, "My district is rich with options for parents when it comes to educating their children." She underscored the diversity of school types as a strength and criticized the legislative push, asserting that the goal shouldn't be to "pick winners and losers so that the state can save money."
During the legislative process, Indiana Senate Democrats proposed 19 amendments aimed at addressing issues like transportation and financial oversight, all of which were rejected by the majority. This spurning of amendments has only amplified apprehensions regarding local community impacts and statewide fiscal effects. Hunley expressed her disappointment, stating, "It is unprecedented to pass legislation without fully understanding the fiscal impact."
Hunley urged those concerned to remain engaged as SB 518 transitions to the House for consideration. "Concerned parents, teachers, students, and community members should continue to follow along and call their Representatives as this bill moves over to the House," she said. Hunley's plea reflects the unease with the narrow focus of the bill, and her worry that it "will not benefit students or taxpayers in the long run" is echoed in her advice to constituents to raise their voices to ensure continued community prosperity, as per the Indiana Senate Democrats.
