Earlier today, a fire erupted in a downtown Indianapolis apartment building, prompting emergency responses and evacuations. According to WTHR, the incident occurred at The Harrison Apartments located at 1320 N. Delaware St., with the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) receiving the call around 8:30 a.m.
More than 30 IFD units arrived to confront the blaze, managing to bring it under control by approximately 9 a.m. During the operation, firefighters rescued two residents from the upper floors, where thick smoke had accumulated, "Six adults and one child were checked out at the scene for smoke inhalation," IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith informed WTHR. Following the checks, one adult was taken to a local hospital, and a child was transported to Riley Hospital for Children.
Investigations into the source of the fire leaned towards an electrical cause. "Investigators believe the fire started in a first-floor apartment and was caused by electrical wiring running to a space heater," revealed by WISH-TV. Residents expressed concerns to IFD that the building had been without heat for an extended period, with some claims suggesting it had been since January or earlier.
Fox59 reported that the fire, beginning on the first floor, led to an evacuation due to hazardous smoke conditions that pervaded the building, despite no injuries being initially reported. The quick response of the IFD units played a crucial role in preventing a more dire outcome, with firefighters facilitating the escape of several individuals, trapped on the upper floors of the multi-level structure. In total, officials said, six people were checked on scene for possible smoke inhalation.
