The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has released a detailed forecast and a hazardous weather outlook for central Indiana, as temperatures and conditions swing from mild to tempestuous this week. In their last update, NWS reported a partly sunny day today, with an expected high near 63 degrees and gusts that could reach up to 23 mph. However, as the week progresses, a shift towards more volatile weather is anticipated.
Heading into the night, locals can expect the temperature to drop to around 34 degrees, with the winds shifting from southwesterly to northerly after midnight. On Tuesday, the weather is anticipated to remain mostly sunny with highs hovering around 43 degrees. Nevertheless, by Wednesday, residents should brace for rain commencing in the afternoon, with a 90 percent chance of precipitation and new rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Wednesday night's forecast turns grimmer, as rain could give way to a possible thunderstorm, maintaining a strong likelihood of precipitation at 100 percent, with new rainfall amounting to between a half and three-quarters of an inch. According to the NWS' Hazardous Weather Outlook, "A few thunderstorms are possible Wednesday afternoon through thursday morning. Severe storms are not expected at this time. Lightning is a threat with any thunderstorm."
As the week pushes on, the NWS indicates a 20 percent chance of rain before Thursday afternoon, and by Thursday night, it clears up somewhat to partly cloudy skies with a low around 25. Looking towards the weekend, the region is faced with an intermix of rain and snow, starting late Friday night, with a chance of precipitation pegged at 30 percent. Come Saturday, the day could see rain and snow with a higher chance of precipitation at 70 percent, and similar conditions lingering into the night. "More wintry precipitation is possible on late Friday Night, and, early on Saturday morning," the Hazardous Weather Outlook cautions.
The forecast for the latter part of the weekend still threatens with a 30 percent chance of rain on Sunday, marking an unsettled period residents should mark on their calendars. The NWS' Hazardous Weather Outlook has stated that "Precipitation on Wednesday may begin as freezing rain mainly along and north of I-74." Meanwhile, "Spotter activation is not anticipated," indicating that while the weather may disrupt daily life, it may not reach the extremes where citizen weather observers need to report in. Central Indiana locals should keep an eye on the skies and an umbrella close at hand as the situation develops.
