An Indianapolis man was taken into custody last Wednesday after a harrowing freeway shooting that left one woman critically injured and another man with non-life-threatening injuries. Donte Roney, 19, faces charges of criminal recklessness and attempted murder, currently held at the Marion County Jail. According to WRTV, the shooting took place early on January 2nd, around 2:45 a.m., on I-70 near Emerson Avenue in downtown Indianapolis.
After arriving at two separate hospitals with gunshot wounds, the victims were linked to the incident on the interstate. The male victim managed to drive to the hospital and carried the severely wounded female to the emergency room, said hospital staff. Keeping an arrest in connection with the shooting, Roney was identified through police investigation which included detective interviews and social media exploration. This information came to light via a news release obtained by FOX59.
The shooting may be part of a worrying trend across Indianapolis-area interstates. In the previous year, state troopers investigated around 70 shootings and responded to over 280 calls related to firearms displayed during road rage encounters. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police handed over the initial response to the Indiana State Police due to the location of the event. Official charges that Roney faces include attempted murder, placing the gravity of the situation into stark relief.
Caught in the middle of an early morning commute turned violent, the shooting victims found themselves thrust into an emergency. The man described the event to police, telling them, as the vehicle got closer to his vehicle, it began to slow down, just before gunshots were heard ringing out. He estimated hearing at least five or six shots, detailed in the court documents mentioned by IndyStar. The female victim was immediately taken into surgery at Methodist Hospital and remains in critical condition, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, while the man was treated for a gunshot wound to his elbow at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital.
The case has now been turned over to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office for further action. It is crucial to understand that the charges against Roney are allegations, as all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The investigation into this grim outbreak of violence on Indianapolis's interstates continues.
