Jefferson Parish's stern warning is straightforward: protect people, pets, pipes, and plants—the four Ps—families should check on the elderly and provide warm havens for animals, and sensitive greenery should be shielded against the freeze, for these conditions could wreak havoc on exposed pipes. Homes raised above ground are especially susceptible, leaving plumbing vulnerable to cold winds and air, the Emergency Operations Center advises wrapping pipes well and a letting faucets trickle to prevent freeze-ups, they have also extended a helpline at (504) 349-5360 for those needing transport to the warming centers or further assistance.
In response to the risk of heating-related fires during cold snaps, residents are reminded about space heater and generator safety. Keeping heaters at least three feet from flammable materials and ensuring generators are well-ventilated and set at a safe distance from living areas to avoid the deadly carbon monoxide buildup—the latter particularly when dealing with power outages caused by harsh weather, cautions Jefferson Parish Emergency Management.
