La Vergne has launched an apprenticeship pilot program to train future first responders. The La Vergne Fire Rescue Department, La Vergne High School, and Motlow Community College have partnered to provide a pathway for students to become certified firefighters and paramedics. Eight students were selected through a detailed process to participate in the program, according to the City of La Vergne.
Applicants completed interviews before enrollment and are now undergoing physical agility tests and written exams in preparation for a 12-week fire academy. Those who complete the program will earn Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 certifications, recognized by the State of Tennessee. Fire Chief Ronny Beasley stated, “We are investing in our youth and preparing them for a career that is as exciting as it is rewarding," as stated by the City of La Vergne.
The La Vergne initiative trains students in both firefighting and emergency medical services. After the fire academy, they enroll in the Paramedic Associate of Applied Science program at Motlow Community College through the Tennessee Promise. The program held its first Signing Day on Thursday to mark the students' commitment. Beasley stated, "They could very likely go on to make upwards of $60k as a firefighter or paramedic." The fire department and educational institutions plan to continue developing trained professionals for emergency response, as reported by the City of La Vergne.
