Landslides have closed NW Cornell Road and the westbound lane of NW Thompson Road in Portland on Monday. According to the Portland Bureau of Transportation, the closures are for public safety after heavy weekend rain made the hillsides unstable.
NW Cornell Road is closed between NW Skyline and NW Thompson Road, except for local residents. On NW Thompson Road, the westbound lane is closed between NW Pinnacle Drive and NW Miller Road. The closures follow landslide reports last Sunday evening. Portland Bureau of Transportation crews will continue inspections and cleanup on Monday. The closures may extend beyond on Monday, depending on inspection results and cleanup progress. Commuters are advised to use alternate routes and follow traffic signs and flaggers.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation is working to clear landslides that have closed major roads for the first time this winter. Portland Bureau of Transportation had handled smaller slides earlier in the season. Road maintenance, including debris removal and hillside stabilization, depends on the weather, leaving the timeline for road reopening uncertain. Portland Bureau of Transportation advises the public to "Please avoid these areas if possible and expect delays." Updates will be provided as work continues.
