A man in Lawrence has been apprehended after a disturbing sequence of events that involved domestic violence, kidnapping, and a high-speed chase that concluded with a vehicle crash.
The incident began around 8:45 a.m. on Saturday when Lawrence Police Department responded to a call from a woman claiming her armed boyfriend was attempting to harm her. According to a statement by Fox59, the suspect, 22-year-old Quintez Gray, forced the woman into a car at gunpoint while she was on the phone with 911 dispatchers. Shortly after, officers arrived to find Gray speeding away from the 9300 block of Otis Avenue, which initiated a chase that was decided not to prematurely end due to the severe nature of the circumstances.
FOPX59 reported that the chase concluded near the intersection of 46th Street and Emerson Avenue when Gray crashed the vehicle. Remarkably, no one was injured during the pursuit or the crash. However, the aftermath of the chase extended beyond the immediate participants; a bystander's car was involved in the collision and overturned as a consequence of Gray's reckless driving.
The Indianapolis community has been increasingly alarmed by the frequency and fallout of police pursuits, especially in the wake of four bystander deaths in the last six months tied to such incidents, as reported by IndyStar. In this instance, officials at the Lawrence Police Department were relieved to avoid further casualties. "Normally, we would terminate a pursuit when that happens. But with this circumstance, where he's abducted her, basically — or he takes her at gunpoint — we're going to keep chasing. That raises it to a whole other level," explained Deputy Chief Travis Cline, recognizing the dire need to continue the pursuit.
Gray is now facing several charges, including battery, domestic battery, criminal confinement using a vehicle, kidnapping, reckless driving causing property damage, reckless driving, and resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, as laid out in the initial police report. WTHR detailed that officers recovered a Glock .40 caliber pistol and ammunition from the crashed vehicle, which along with other items, has been logged as evidence. Further information on the female victim has not been specified by Lawrence police.
