In a classic display of civic engagement, State Sen. Kyle Walker (R-Lawrence) recently played host at the Statehouse to a group of local students, each taking a turn to serve as Senate pages in January, this tradition of student involvement provides a unique behind-the-scenes look at the legislative process, acquainting the young Hoosiers with the gears of governance that often turn unseen.
The students, hailing from various schools within the state, included Adrianne Cox of Leo Junior High School and Andrew Cox of Leo Elementary School both from Leo-Cedarville, alongside Cecelia Cobb-Dennard from Fall Creek Valley Middle School in Indianapolis; these young individuals joined others from the region, immersed in an environment where the abstracts of textbooks meet the concrete of Capitol floors.
Additionally, the Statehouse welcomed Luke Jarymowycz Jr. from Guerin Catholic High School, his sibling Matthew Jarymowycz from Saint Louis de Montfort Catholic School, both residents of Fishers, as well as Kai Maki of Oaks Academy Middle School, who was pictured with another supporter of the program, State Sen. Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette), Hayden McDonald from Riverside Junior High, and Michael Molter from Saint Simon the Apostle Catholic School also participating in this educational initiative.
Fishers Junior High School's representative, Katherine Schultheiss, took part as well. The program itself serves to enlighten, often hinting at the deep responsibility that comes with civic duties and stirring perhaps, a latent interest in public service among these young citizens, whether they know it yet or not.
Engagement details, including a photograph of Kai Maki with State Sen. Deery, were shared on the official website of the Indiana Senate Republicans, confirming the event's occurrence and punctuating the importance of empowering youth through direct participation in state governance.
