An incident on a busy Oakland Park boulevard left one man hospitalized after a deputy-involved shooting. WSVN reports that yesterday just before 5:50 p.m., Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputies were called to the scene at East Oakland Park Boulevard and Northeast Sixth Avenue regarding a suspicious person.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered a man wielding a weapon. Witnesses described the scene, with one, Andrew Wilkinson, observing the man was holding a knife approximately six inches long. “The blade was probably six inches [long]. He had a handle, and the blade, it was pretty big. I wasn’t getting out of my car,” Wilkinson told WSVN. According to another witness, Bill O'Connell, the subject appeared agitated and was stabbing at the cars going by and seemed to be in a disturbed state.

Deputies on-site attempted to de-escalate the situation, giving the man multiple commands to drop the weapon. Following the unsuccessful less-than-lethal weapon deployment, the subject escalated the situation by running toward deputies, which led to them discharging their firearms, as detailed by a CBS News Miami report. The confrontation resulted in the suspect's injury and subsequent hospitalization; however, his condition was not disclosed at the time.

Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded to the scene to administer medical aid. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken charge of investigating the critical incident, while BSO's Internal Affairs Unit is also inquiring internally into the deputies' response to the episode. WSVN affirmed that several deputies have been placed on administrative leave in the meantime, which remains a standard procedure in such circumstances.

As investigations proceeded, the affected portion of East Oakland Park Boulevard was closed in both directions between Northeast Sixth Avenue and Northeast Fifth Terrace. The shooting's aftermath inevitably caused disruptions and concerned community members, with BSO assuring that a thorough examination of the events that unfolded will be conducted.
