A mechanical malfunction is to blame for the injury of a man at Attitash Mountain Resort in New Hampshire, who fell approximately 20 feet after the chair he was seated in detached from the ski lift. The harrowing incident occurred on Sunday midday and involved the resort's Flying Bear lift, NBC Boston reports. After the fall, witnesses claimed the man was alert and could walk, and he was subsequently transported to the hospital with injuries that were determined not to be life-threatening.
Following the event, which took place roughly at 12:15 p.m., emergency responders and tramway inspectors from the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office were swift to arrive on the scene. The initial investigation spearheaded by the fire marshal's office suggests a mechanical failure was likely the cause of the detachment, an incident that, fortunately, resulted in no other reported injuries as the other passengers were safely unloaded at the top of the lift, according to a statement obtained by MassLive.
The lift has been closed for use as the inspection by the fire marshal's office and the Passenger Tramway Safety Board continues. In response to the accident, the lift's manufacturer has been contacted, and is actively assisting with the ongoing investigation.
As authorities investigate the situation, the lift will remain out of service. Witnesses or those with information are urged to contact the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office.
