The post paid tribute to Deputy Settles, stating, "IN MEMORIUM: Deputy Floyd T. Settles - End of Watch: February 24, 1972," according to Marion County Sheriff's Office. It recounted the heartbreaking events leading up to his passing, after being shot on February 2, 1972, during a bank robbery.
The post recalled the somber details of Settles' final call, indicating that Deputy Settles died from gunshot wounds inflicted at the scene of a bank robbery. Remembered as a dedicated officer, the memory of Settles lingers in the department, even after half a century. Following the robbery, two men were apprehended, convicted, and given life sentences for their crimes – a fact punctuated by the post as a note of closing justice in Deputy Settles's story.
