Under Miami's sunny skies, a spirited crowd gathered yesterday for the debut of the "Cupid Splash," a Valentine's Day weekend event held in Miami Beach. Despite the cooler waters, 100 costumed participants took the plunge to support the Biscayne Bay Recovery Fund, raising funds and awareness for the Miami Foundation's environmental efforts. "Biscayne Bay is at a tipping point; it’s the blue heart of our community, economically incredibly important,” organizer Bruce Sherman remarked to WSVN.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, the chilly challenge was accompanied by a costume contest and an awards ceremony to honor the team that raised the most money. The event, traditionally held in the Northeast and Midwest, aims to now annually bind the Miami community together in support of a common cause. A Saturday announcement on the City of Miami Beach Facebook page encouraged locals to participate, to boldly shake off the Expected for a bout of the unexpected, and to support the cleaning, protecting, and restoration of Biscayne Bay. The Zero Drownings Miami-Dade Initiative along with youth fishing, conservation, and environmental education programs in 2025 are also beneficiaries of the event.

Registration and fundraised pledges were managed through the event's dedicated website, where participants could start teams and make donations. The full amount of the contributions was directed towards the noble environmental causes underlining the significance of Biscayne Bay's delicate ecosystem. Ahead of the splash, an enticement was issued: great prizes awaited the most valiant of fundraisers, including two round-trip tickets courtesy of American Airlines for the fundraiser who secured the most pledges, with additional rewards for the largest team and the best costume.

The Cupid Splash represents a spirit of community unity, a sentiment echoed by Sherman who emphasized its importance across party lines and political divides, mentioning in his statement obtained by WSVN, “It’s important for everybody, no matter what your party, no matter what your politics; we all love the bay.”
