Morgan County could potentially become Indiana's latest beneficiary of the data center boom, with a 391-acre data center campus proposed just outside of Indianapolis. The site, as detailed by Data Center Dynamics, is stationed in Morgan Township, bracketed by Keller Hill Road, North Antioch Road, Indiana 42, and West Union Church Road, east of Monrovia.
Earlier today, local residents will have the chance to directly engage with the proposal and the officials behind it during a community meeting. The Morgan County Economic Development Corporation (EDC), acting on behalf of an undisclosed developer and end user, has lodged a request to rezone the currently agricultural and residential land for this sizable project. As FOX59 reports, the plan entails erecting up to five buildings, with services to rely on the Monrovia sewer system. The meeting is set to unfold at Monrovia Christian Church, offering a platform for locals to learn and inquire further into the plans surrounding their community’s development.
Morgan County officials are set to debate the rezoning during a meeting on February 10. According to Inside Indiana Business, Mike Dellinger, the EDC's Executive Director, has affirmed the project's significance and the expected benefits it could bring, stating, "It’s obviously a project of great economic significance, and it’s in a location that’s well-suited for it."
The project site currently consists to 18 parcels of land across differing ownerships. The anonymous developer involved is reported to have already secured options to purchase the land, pending the project's progression. Alluding to the data center's potential impact, Dellinger also mentioned the necessity to "get the infrastructure to the site that we need in a timely manner," which would further boost the favorability of the site for the proposed development, as per Inside Indiana Business.
Indiana has established itself as a magnet for large-scale tech investments recently, seeing companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft announce hyperscale data center projects within the state. Just last year, Google secured 900 acres in Fort Wayne, and Meta woven plans for a 1,500-acre development, as reported by Data Center Dynamics. The cumulative investments from these tech giants virtually round up to a striking $25 billion—a clear indicator of the high stakes involved in the growing digital infrastructure of Indiana.
