A New Orleans man received a hefty sentence after a failed carjacking connected with federal gun charges, as the Justice Department looks to crack down on such crimes. Warren Roland, 33, faced Judge Brandon S. Long and was handed a 137-month term for attempted carjacking and an additional 120 months for firearms offenses, set to run concurrently, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's office. Roland's run-in with the law leaves him with 3 years supervised release post-sentence and a $200 special assessment fee.
The events leading up to Roland's sentencing began on March 24, 2022, when an individual placed a 9-1-1 call about a man spotted with a firearm. New Orleans Police Department officers responded, locating Roland who then fled, leading to a foot chase. Roland was observed attempting to enter a stopped Toyota SUV on Read Boulevard while armed, the attempt fell apart, and a firearm discharge occurred before he was apprehended. The NOPD managed to recover a loaded Smith and Wesson Model SD9 pistol from the scene, as detailed in the official DOJ release.
This incident falls under the auspices of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a comprehensive initiative intended to reduce violent crime across neighborhoods by involving all levels of law enforcement, alongside community efforts. The program, which has seen a strengthened approach since May 2021, focuses on developing trust within communities, supporting organizations aimed at preventing violence, and establishing clear enforcement strategies. Roland's arrest and subsequent conviction signify the fragile peace that law enforcement tries to maintain in the streets of our cities.
Instruments of law like Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Dawkins pursued the case under the Violent Crime Unit's aegis, with commendations from Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson for the interagency collaboration. Simpson expressed in a statement the effectiveness of the partnership between ATF and NOPD in tackling gun violence, highlighting the importance of coordinated efforts to enhance neighborhood safety. Such cases underscore the ongoing drama of our community's struggle against gun crimes, and the law's relentless pursuit of safety and order.
