The Oakland Zoo community is mourning the loss of one of its most respected residents, an 11-year-old wolf named Sequoia. According to a social media post from the Oakland Zoo, the geriatric wolf's health sharply declined during the first weekend of February, leading to a heart-wrenching decision to euthanize him to prevent further suffering.

Known as a steadfast figure among his pack, Sequoia fathered four cubs: Arroyo, Lassen, Sonora, and Anza. Sequoia was Siskiyou's partner. Following his passing, the zoo's staff has been attentive to the remaining wolves, who appear to be coping with the loss of their patriarch. Keeper Alicia, who had the privilege of working closely with Sequoia throughout his life, shared, as per the Oakland Zoo, "Much like his namesake, Sequoia was a tall, proud, majestic pillar of California Trail."

The zoo staff has reflected on Sequoia's contributions to his family and the institution's broader educational and conservation efforts. His legacy, rooted in his offspring and his impact on visitors, will continue to echo through the narratives the zookeepers and educators will keep alive. Alicia fondly recalled, per the Oakland Zoo, "He was the bedrock for his mate Siskiyou, but really came into his own when he got to raise four cubs."
