A string of holdups has swept through several Chicago neighborhoods, raising concerns among residents in the Bucktown, East Village, Noble Square, and West Town areas. According to a community alert issued by Chicago Police, these recent armed robberies occurred in the 12th, 14th, and 25th Districts, with assailants wielding handguns to demand personal property from their victims.
The crimes occurred on February 17 and 19, with a series of incidents happening in rapid-fire succession; victims were accosted mid-afternoon and late at night, while one incident followed another in the harrowing span of mere minutes and criminals fleeing in vehicles later identified as stolen, such as a grey Hyundai Sonata and a black Hyundai Elantra. Specific locations on the blocks of W. Erie, N. Talman, N. Pulaski, W. Armitage, W. Charleston, W. Ohio, N. Paulina, W. Grand, N. Wood, and N. Wolcott were pinpointed as the scenes of these brash daylight and after-dark confrontations.
The offenders have been described as two males, estimated to be between the ages of 20 and 30, with one standing approximately 6'0" and another whose height is undisclosed; both were reported to have worn black ski masks during the incidents. Chicago Police are urging individuals within these affected areas to remain vigilant, suggesting that people should stick together when walking, avoid carrying large sums of money, and to always be cautious of suspicious behavior around them.
As part of the advisory, authorities are also recommending community members to seek safety in numbers, ensuring to park in well-lit and high-traffic areas; but more importantly, they emphasize the criticality of avoiding any confrontation or attempts to negotiate or flee from the perpetrators, as it can lead to further danger or potential harm which could exacerbate an already volatile situation.
