The Kirkland's Home in Vernon Hills is scheduled to close Dec. 27, according to store staff quoted by the Chicago Tribune. Staff say the store will remain open until then.
The Chicago Tribune reported that employees described the store, which opened in 2017, as performing well. They said its lease was due for renewal and the company appeared to be moving in a new direction. Staff also said they would be laid off, but could not say what would happen to the building after Kirkland's leaves.
It's not an isolated case. Staff said numerous Kirkland's locations are closing across the country, part of a broader shakeup tied to a corporate merger that's been unfolding since last year.
A Merger Reshaping the Chain
The Brand House Collective, formerly known as Kirkland's Inc., merged with Bed Bath & Beyond last year. That corporate change is part of the chain's recent history, while the specific reason for the Vernon Hills closure remains unclear.
TheStreet reported that about 19 stores were underperforming and that the company planned to close 25 locations. Those chainwide figures do not establish the reason for the Vernon Hills closure.
What National Sales Data Show
U.S. Census Bureau data published by FRED put advance, seasonally adjusted U.S. sales at furniture and home furnishings stores at $10,696 million in September 2026. That single monthly figure does not establish whether sales were growing or declining over a broader period, and the national total does not explain the Vernon Hills closure.
Rebranding Plans Remain Unclear for Vernon Hills
Whether the Vernon Hills store will become a Bed Bath & Beyond Home remains unclear. The Tribune reported it could not confirm the location's fate beyond closure, and attempts to reach a spokesperson for the Brand House Collective were unsuccessful.
The uncertainty echoes what's playing out at other Kirkland's locations nationwide. In Brick, New Jersey, the Kirkland's Home store at Brick Commons is preparing to close, though an official closing date wasn't immediately available, as reported by NJ.com.
Same Closing Date Surfaces in Memphis
In the Memphis area, Kirkland's Cordova and Southaven stores were scheduled to close Dec. 27, their final day, as noted by TheStreet. A storewide 30% off sale began ahead of the closures, and local outlets reported that once those two stores shut down, the only Kirkland's location left standing in the Memphis area will be in Collierville at 3555 S Houston Levee Road.
Retail Dive reported that the company planned to convert some of its stores into Bed Bath & Beyond locations over the following two years: Retail Dive.
Staff say the Vernon Hills store will continue operating until Dec. 27. What will happen to the building, or whether a Bed Bath & Beyond Home will eventually take its place, has not been confirmed.
