A shooting in Sandy's Big Bear Park left a 17-year-old hospitalized Thursday afternoon, stirring concerns among residents. According to KUTV, witnesses reported that at around 5 p.m., two vehicles were seen fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed after shots were fired.
Unified Police Department (UPD) officers arrived to find evidence of the shooting. "Police reported to the scene and found bullet shell casings," said Sgt. Aymee Race, as per KUTV. Approximately twenty minutes following the initial reports of gunfire, authorities were alerted to a teen who had sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Police said the shooting may be gang-related and described the event as an isolated incident.
The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was admitted to a local hospital. According to KSLTV, Sgt. Race informed them that UPD was notified about the teen arriving at the hospital with the gunshot wound, prompting further investigation into the incident, which they believe to be gang-related. Big Bear Park was advised to be avoided while police carried out their investigations.
As the investigation into the shooting continues, details about the suspects remain scant. Working with other agencies to identify the suspects, having seen leaving the area quickly after the shots were fired, UPD is calling upon the public's help in this regard. "UPD is working with other police agencies to identify the suspects," told UPD to ABC4. They assured the public that there is no imminent threat despite the suspects remaining at large.
