Last Friday evening, a routine patrol took a sharp turn into a significant seizure for the Springfield Police Department's C3 Unit, along with Squad "C" officers. They pulled up to a no-parking zone on High Street and discovered a stolen car, running and unmanned. It was approximately 6:35 p.m. when the situation escalated, resulting in the arrest of a local 23-year-old man, Christopher Rivera, and the confiscation of not only drugs but also a loaded firearm.

The officers approached the vehicle, which had been previously reported stolen. After Rivera opened the car door upon the officer's request, he resisted to turn the vehicle off. According to the Springfield Police Department, an officer had to intervene to turn off the ignition. Once outside the car, Rivera began reaching towards his waist and attempted to flee, only to be quickly apprehended by the officers who chased him, seizing a loaded firearm tucked in his waistband.

Back-up promptly arrived to assist with the arrest and a second firearm magazine was found in Rivera’s possession. Further search revealed an additional illicit finding - nearly 100 bags of heroin and around $300 in cash hidden in the car. Rivera now faces a litany of charges including unlawful firearm possession, possession of a firearm during a felony, possession with intent to distribute a Class A drug, and several other charges related to the stolen vehicle and resisting arrest.

Rivera, now in custody, was charged with various offenses that reflect the severity of the incident. These charges include "Carrying a Firearm without a License, Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony," among several other counts listed by the Springfield Police Department's official release. Rivera's arraignment details have yet to be released.
