The San Diego County Sheriff's Office reported to a call of an assault at approximately 12:40 p.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival at 12:44 p.m., deputies found Anthony Trujillo with serious trauma to his upper torso. Efforts by deputies at the scene and subsequent medical interventions by Heartland Fire and AMR paramedics were unable to save Trujillo's life.
The following day, an autopsy confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the neck, with the manner classified as homicide. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department and detectives from the Lemon Grove Substation, supported by several task forces, worked together to identify and apprehend the suspect. Yesterday, Andrew Gomez Cardona, 26, was arrested in El Cajon. The suspect had been residing in Lemon Grove at the time of the arrest, as revealed by the Sheriff's Homicide Unit.
The investigation remains ongoing. Meanwhile, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit continues to appeal to the public for information that may shed light on this senseless act of violence. In a statement obtained by Hoodline, initial reports have suggested that the victim and the suspect may have been acquainted, but the details of that relationship currently remain unclear.
