A man is in custody after he allegedly stole an ambulance Wednesday from outside a Chicago hospital, authorities reported. The incident occurred near Swedish Hospital at the intersection of Foster and Washtenaw Avenue around 12:30 p.m., with no one inside the emergency vehicle at the time of theft, ABC7 Chicago detailed.
The stolen ambulance was a red and white-colored Elite ambulance taken from Swedish Covenant Hospital, at 2739 West Foster Avenue, reports noted. Following the theft, Chicago police launched a search that concluded when the vehicle was found in a parking lot off I-94 and Dundee Road in Northbrook. WGN said that the vehicle was located along Skokie Boulevard. No injuries were connected to the incident.
Upon the vehicle's recovery, aerial footage from Chopper 7 captured the scene as officers investigated the ambulance. Northbrook police have described it as an active investigation but have not released further details on the circumstances leading to their recovery of the ambulance or the identity of the man apprehended.
While the suspect was taken into custody by Northbrook police, a spokesperson for the Chicago police confirmed the arrest to WGN. At present, updates on the case are sparse as the situation is ongoing. Authorities promise more information as they become available.
