A high-speed car chase across multiple counties in metro Atlanta escalated into gunfire and ended with a crash and the arrest of two suspects on Monday night. The incident involved a vehicle that had been reported stolen and was potentially connected to a series of car break-ins in South Fulton County. According to the Atlanta News First, Fayette County deputies initiated the pursuit after spotting the black Jeep on State Route 85 North.
The chase, which saw speeds reaching upwards of 100 mph, traversed through Fayette and Clayton counties with the suspects shooting at pursuing officers. As the pursuit continued, at least two vehicles were struck by gunfire including a patrol vehicle and a bystander's car as per the report by FOX 5 Atlanta. The chaotic scene led to a collision involving the suspects' vehicle, a Cadillac Escalade, and a Honda Accord at an intersection in Clayton County.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office reported that shots were fired again following the crash, resulting in both the male driver and a female passenger being taken into custody. The female was arrested at the scene while the male driver, who was shot by deputies during the apprehension, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment, the Sheriff’s Office stated.
In a dramatic turn of events, after the collision, the male suspect "exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, crossing multiple lanes of traffic," as Clayton County deputies highlighted the risk the injured suspect posed, braving the traffic to avoid arrest. It was during this attempt to elude capture that a deputy-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect was subsequently detained and hospitalized for gunshot wounds, detailed the officials in a statement obtained by Atlanta News First.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has stepped in to conduct a thorough inquiry into the officer-involved shooting as part of their standard protocol for such incidents. In the aftermath of the high-stakes incident, no deputies from either county sustained injuries.
