Illegal dumping remains a problem in Northwest Miami-Dade, but thanks to the efforts of the Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management’s (DSWM) Special Investigations Unit (SIU), two men have been arrested. The SIU uncovered illegal disposal of construction materials and furniture in the public right-of-way during a recent operation.
According to the Miami-Dade County release, on January 22, SIU agents caught the suspects as they were unloading items along NW 105th Street. After admitting to their actions, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Department arrested them, and they were taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. DSWM Director Aneisha Daniel, PhD, said, "It is our responsibility to protect our surroundings, ensuring we do not damage or pollute our communities and roadways. In Miami-Dade County, illegal dumping is not only harmful but also illegal, and those caught will face severe penalties."
Illegal dumping costs the county millions in enforcement and cleanup. Miami-Dade residents are encouraged to report such activity by calling 911 if seen in progress, and to avoid direct confrontation. For past dumping incidents, residents should call 311 and provide details such as vehicle license plates, if available.
Residents can also use the MDC Solid Waste mobile app, available for free on iTunes and Google Play, to report violations. The DSWM reminds residents that illegal dumping is a crime in Miami-Dade County, with penalties including fines, vehicle seizure, arrest, and incarceration.
