The quest to widen broadband access in Indiana took a significant leap forward after the Senate gave unanimous approval to a bill on Monday. Senate Bill 502, initiated by State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington), aims to enhance the coordination and deployment of broadband infrastructure, especially in areas that have long been starved for high-speed internet. According to a report from Indiana Senate Republicans, the bill now stands at the cusp of House consideration.
The legislation necessitates that companies leveraging federal or state funds and aspiring to attach broadband equipment to utility poles provide quarterly status updates to the Indiana Broadband Office. The move, seeking to simplify the installation process for broadband providers, is ensuring that the most underserved regions are prioritized for support. As stated in an article by Indiana Senate Republicans, Senator Zay expressed his commitment, saying, "I have been working on bringing broadband access to rural communities across Indiana for years." Zay's efforts with SB 502 build upon previous initiatives to bolster economic growth by expanding reliable internet access throughout the state.
Prior undertakings by Zay include the authored Senate Enrolled Act 377 in 2021, which established a framework for the Indiana Connectivity Program. A key feature of the program was the creation of the Indiana Broadband Connectivity Portal, which provides a channel for residents to request broadband services, simultaneously enabling internet service providers to submit proposals for a Rural Broadband Grant to expand services to designated addresses. The intertwined previous efforts of Zay, captured in an article on Indiana Senate Republicans, showcase a continued push to close the digital divide in Indiana.
As the bill makes its way to the House of Representatives, Senator Zay remains optimistic about its progression. "I am pleased to see this bill pass the Senate," Zay told Indiana Senate Republicans, and looking forward to its further success. With the 2025 legislative session still unwinding, Zay encourages constituents from Senate District 17 to engage with his office through contacts made via an online "Contact Me" form or by phone, continuing the dialogue on how to best serve the connectivity needs of Indiana's communities.
