The University of Utah has stepped into a new era of technology and innovation with the appointment of Manish Parashar as its first Chief AI Officer, a move signaling the institution's commitment to leading the charge in artificial intelligence research and application, according to the University of Utah. Parashar, already a respected figure on campus as director of the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute and a Presidential Professor, will now help shape the university's AI future by leading its strategy, fostering cross-sector collaborations, ensuring ethical AI practices, and spearheading impactful research endeavors.
President Taylor Randall expressed his optimism for the university's path forward with Parashar at the helm, stating, "We are excited about the advancement of artificial intelligence initiatives at our institution, in the state of Utah and beyond," as obtained by the University of Utah and highlighting Parashar's "expertise and talent" as fundamental to enhancing the university's innovation profile, Parashar started his tenure on February 10 and reports to U Provost Mitzi M. Montoya, taking charge of an ambitious Responsible AI Initiative that kicked off with a $100 million pledge to positively influence sectors like the environment, health care, and education where the university boasts considerable strength.
As part of its goal to pioneer excellence in responsible AI, the university launched the One-U RAI initiative in October 2023, pulling together resources and faculties from various corners of the campus to work in a unified, fast-action group that seeks to carve out priorities and a roadmap for areas of focus deemed pivotal. The initiative has already made significant strides by awarding its first batch of Faculty Fellow, Postdoctoral Fellow, and Distinguished Visitor recognitions last autumn, setting the stage for more faculty cluster hiring expected to ramp up in 2025.
Last month saw another milestone for One-U RAI with the launch of the One-Utah Responsible Community Consortium, creating a platform for stakeholders in academia, government, industry, and the community at large to contribute to responsible AI development and usage, Parashar, reflecting his vision at the project launch, emphasized the transformative potential of AI by asserting, "It can help us address problems that can impact every citizen of the state and country," as per the University of Utah, reinforcing the university's commitment to leveraging AI in solving real-world challenges and preparing students for an AI-equipped workforce.
The newly minted Chief AI Officer brings an illustrious resume to the role, featuring a stint at the National Science Foundation, co-chair positions on key national committees and task forces, and advisory roles at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. A recognized leader in the computing field, Parashar's expertise is backed by multiple awards and his position on the editorial boards and organizing committees for various journals and conferences, his distinction as a Fellow of several esteemed scientific associations cements his reputation as an authority in the realm of advanced computing and AI.
