Early Saturday morning, Holyoke's quiet was shattered when a vehicle, having failed to obey a traffic signal, found its terminus in the structure of a home, with the Holyoke Police Department springing into action. Responding to the chaotic scene near Northampton Street and Westfield Road, officers came upon a startling discovery inside the crashed vehicle—an illegal firearm lay amidst the wreckage.
Initially stopped for running a red light at approximately 2:45 a.m., in a post obtained by the Holyoke Police Department's Facebook page, officers engaged with the driver who briefly complied, only for the situation to escalate. The pursuit that ensued was short-lived; however, the driver sped away, precariously winding up crashing into a residential porch. Reported by the police, the high-speed chase was soon discontinued for safety.
Neither the occupants of the vehicle—a 17-year-old female driver and her passenger, 19-year-old Shaniquha Thomas—nor the inhabitants of the unsuspecting home were seriously injured in this abrupt collision. Despite no serious injuries reported, the aspect of public safety can't be understated as the car could have easily inflicted harm in its reckless trajectory.
Officers Joshua Rivera and Jose Millan, upon inspecting the vehicle, discovered the illegal firearm, which set the stage for arrests. Thomas, a resident of Holyoke, faces a litany of charges including "carrying a firearm without a license, improper storage of a firearm and possession of ammunition without an FID Card," as detailed by the police department's post. Left unnamed due to legal protections for minors, the underage driver will be facing both firearm-related and vehicular charges, as per the Holyoke Police Department.
