The conflagration, which broke out early in the morning, produced towering smoke plumes visible miles away and led to the closure of South Dixie Highway, a critical thoroughfare, as firefighters battled to contain the blaze. According to CBS12, the inferno was still not under control as of 7:30 a.m., although no injuries had been reported.
The impact of the fire extended beyond the affected building at 420 Claremore Drive. South Dixie Highway's shutdown forced drivers to reroute onto South Olive Avenue, and local police cautioned that both directions of the road would be closed, approximately eight blocks north of Belvedere Road. Additionally, train services along the nearby tracks faced disruptions due to the fire's proximity, as noted by authorities who urged avoidance of the area while emergency crews were present.
Reinforcing concerns for public health, city officials advised individuals with respiratory issues to remain indoors until the smoke dissipated. As Palm Beach Post reported, the early morning atmospheric conditions, known as an inversion, hampered the smoke's vertical dispersal. Sammy Hadi, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Miami, explained, "The inversion isn't allowing the smoke to rise much and that's why it's just very slowly moving north because there are very light breezes out of the southwest." This phenomenon also affected visibility for the Terminal Doppler radar at Palm Beach International Airport, which was temporarily out of service.
The Flamingo Park neighborhood, including residential and commercial properties, was evacuated for safety, and measures were taken to protect students at the nearby Greene School by shutting down air conditioning units that could draw in smoke.
