Firefighters in Billerica, Massachusetts, responded to a structure fire at Iron Horse Park yesterday, facing challenges from strong winds. According to WCVB, the blaze escalated rapidly, aided by gusty conditions that spread the fire to an adjacent wooded area and resulted in numerous brush fires. The situation was further complicated as vehicles parked near the wooden structure were also engulfed by the flames.

Firefighters from nearby departments responded to the scene, working to contain the fire's spread as they faced challenging conditions. In a statement obtained by 7News, Fire Chief Brian Cole shared the complexity of the firefighting efforts, "It’s just difficult because the water doesn’t go where you want it to go, the fire’s pushing embers to places that you didn’t expect it to go." The abandoned building in the park was quickly engulfed by the flames, collapsing as the fire continued to spread despite efforts to contain it.

Concerns for the nearby residential area grew as strong winds carried embers, increasing the risk of additional fires. Due to water supply issues at the scene, crews requested brush trucks to help prevent the flames from spreading to homes behind the destroyed structure.

Officials worked to manage both the main fire and the risks posed by the burned structure. Fire Chief Cole stated that the primary goal was to prevent the fire from reaching nearby residential areas. Despite debris falling around them, firefighters continued their efforts, containing property damage to Iron Horse Park and helping to protect nearby homes and residents.
