On Saturday afternoon in South Boston, Alejandro Ortiz, 47, of Boston, was arrested at the South Bay Mall on multiple firearm charges after allegedly threatening mall security. Police from District C-6 took him into custody following the incident, as reported by the Boston Police Department.
Mall security reported a man, later identified as Ortiz, displayed a firearm at the South Bay Mall and pointed it at the ground before heading toward the Home Depot area. Police, who were already responding to a call about drug use in the Target bathroom, redirected their efforts to locate Ortiz. When officers found him behind the Home Depot, he resisted arrest, and a struggle occurred. Ortiz reached for his waistband, leading officers to use force to arrest him. A search revealed Ortiz was carrying a KAHR Arms handgun with one round in the chamber and five in the magazine, with a defaced serial number, according to the Boston Police Department.
The Boston Police Department said "Officers gave multiple commands to deescalate the suspect which he refused to comply," leading to the arrest of Ortiz. He was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm, possession of ammunition, possessing a firearm in commission of a felony, defacement of a firearm serial number, assault with a dangerous weapon, and possession of Class C drugs. Ortiz is expected to be arraigned in South Boston District Court.
