In a disturbing case out of Carlyle, Illinois, Mickail S. Cranford, 24, has been handed a 100-year prison sentence after a guilty plea for the predatory criminal sexual assault of children under 13 and the manufacturing of child pornography. The sentencing took place following a collaborative effort between Attorney General Kwame Raoul's office and local law enforcement agencies. This effort, as reported by the Illinois Attorney General's Office, aimed at curbing the distribution and production of child sexual abuse material online.
Raoul's office worked in concert with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, culminating in a search of Cranford's residence in September 2024 and his subsequent arrest. "This sentence represents justice for victims who have been exploited and abused," Raoul said, as stated by the Illinois Attorney General's Office. Having discovered evidence of child sexual abuse material in Cranford's residence, he was given a chance to see a day in court by the same search that led to his arrest.
The case was jointly prosecuted by the Attorney General's office and the Clinton County State’s Attorney, J.D. Brandmeyer. During the collaborative pursuit of justice, Brandmeier said, "I commend the Illinois Attorney General’s office for working relentlessly with us to ensure that those who prey on children are held accountable for their actions," the Illinois Attorney General's Office noted.
As part of its public advocacy, Attorney General Raoul encourages the reporting of child sexual exploitation through online platforms such as cybertipline.com. Assistance with child abuse cases can also be obtained through the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services website. Anyone interested in locating local child advocacy centers can find them listed at childrensadvocacycentersofillinois.org. Assistant Attorneys General Jenifer Peck and David Sternau were noted for prosecuting Cranford's case on behalf of Raoul’s office.
