Residents in Chicago's 8th and 9th Districts are on high alert as a series of burglaries targeting motor vehicles has recently escalated. The Chicago Police have issued a community alert to inform citizens, particularly in the Chicago Lawn and Deering areas, that burglaries are happening with increased frequency to truck drivers in March, striking in the quiet of the night, according to a release from the Chicago Police Department.
The burglars have developed a consistent modus operandi, forcibly prying open the rear door window of tractor-trailers to gain entry and swiftly taking off with the CPU/GPS tracking devices. The incidents, spanning several neighborhoods, include Armour Square, Gage Park, and West Lawn with the thieves making their move typically under the cover of darkness. According to the police report, the incidents have been timed between late evening and early morning hours.
Specific incidents have been pinpointed at various locations including the 400 Block of West 25th Place, the 5000 Block of South Homan Avenue, and the 5900 Block of South Pulaski Road with the most recent occurrences logged between March 15th and 16th, thus creating an emerging pattern that’s put the community on edge and authorities on a keen lookout for suspects described as three unknown male offenders.
In response to the burglaries, Chicago Police advise residents and truck owners to remain vigilant, actively report any suspicious activity immediately and if confronted, stay calm and try to note any distinguishing features of the suspect like scars, limps, or dental characteristics. For those equipped with surveillance technology, the recommendation is clear; preserve and duplicate any footage that might aid the investigative process and if approached by witnesses, secure their contact details for future coordination with law enforcement; a testimony to the power of communal efforts in bolstering safety.
