Chicago's business scene is set for a significant boost with Governor JB Pritzker's latest announcement of an $18.6 million investment in global building materials company Holcim's operational headquarters for its planned North American spin-off, to be known as Amrize. According to a press release from the Illinois Governor's office, this move comes as part of an Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) agreement with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO). "Illinois is thrilled that Holcim will continue to grow its presence in our state," Governor Pritzker stated, emphasizing the state's strong infrastructure and skilled workforce as key factors in the decision.

Supporting nearly doubling its Chicago staff, the company plans to add 50 new full-time jobs and retain 62 full-time jobs through this investment. As part of the state's EDGE program, Holcim will be able to take advantage of a tax credit, aligning with the over $650 million in investments committed to Illinois communities in 2024. While creating new, good-paying jobs, DCEO Director Kristin Richards highlighted that "Bolstered by State incentives, Holcim will further invest in Chicago."

The establishment of Chicago as Amrize's operational headquarters underscores the city's attractiveness to businesses. Amrize, following the planned spin-off, will be primed to leverage the construction industry's momentum across North America, becoming the largest company focused solely on this market. As noted by Senate Leader Mattie Hunter (D - Chicago), "Holcim's decision to select Chicago as the location for its new spin-off company's headquarters is due in no small part to the competitive incentives offered by the State of Illinois." The company plans to continue cultivating its Chicago roots by adding and retaining local jobs.

Amrize's future in Chicago holds potential for significant local economic growth. With over 450 employees already in Illinois, Holcim has influenced the construction of landmarks such as Maggie Daley Park and the 606 Trail. The expanded operational headquarters in Chicago and a network of more than 1,000 facilities will enable Amrize to reach all U.S. states and Canadian provinces. "This company will continue to plant its roots in the Chicago area by retaining and creating new good-paying jobs for Illinois' working families," Senator Hunter told reporters, affirming the company's commitment to the state's economy.
