A Colombian national is facing serious charges after law enforcement officials seized a large haul of fentanyl pills and a firearm from his possession in Utah. David Estiven Alvear Carcamo, 20, has been indicted by a federal grand jury, and his case signals another development in the United States' ongoing battle against narcotics trafficking and the challenges of illegal immigration.
Beginning in January 2025, the Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force began to solo investigate a drug trafficking organization suspected of funneling narcotics into the Utah region. On March 4, as part of this investigation, officials executed search warrants on a residence in Sandy, Utah, and a vehicle believed to be linked to the operation. Law enforcement discovered approximately 10,000 fentanyl pills, with a total weight of about 2.35 pounds, along with a handgun in the vehicle owned and occupied by Carcamo at the time.
The charges leveled against Carcamo include possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, and alien in possession of a firearm and ammunition. "His initial appearance on the indictment is March 20, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in courtroom 7.1 before a U.S. Magistrate Judge at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City," as detailed by the U.S. Department of Justice.
