A Coos Bay resident, Thomas Owen Barnett, has been brought before federal court on serious allegations involving child pornography. Barnett, 39, faces charges including production and distribution of child pornography, as well as using a minor to produce explicit material, as the U.S. Attorney's Office in Oregon reported.
As the case unfolded, Barnett allegedly used a minor between September and December of 2023 to engage in sexually explicit conduct for recording purposes. In the following year, he is accused of pervading social media platforms like Kik and Instagram, searching for opportunities to engage in child sexual abuse, and advertising the sale of such illicit content. Barnett's methods, including impersonating a young man or a minor female, draw out stark reverberations of betrayal against the innocence of youth. In these online interactions, he is alleged to have bartered for exchange of infant exploitation material, according to federal authorities.
