The Coral Springs City Commission recently awarded a $50,000 grant to Perfumania, a local perfume store in Coral Square Mall, as part of the city's Economic Development Incentive Program. The grant will be used for the store's facelift, with the goal of enhancing the mall's appeal, according to TAPinto.
Commissioner Shawn Cerra opposed the grant, stating, "I feel that just improving one storefront with $50,000 would not necessarily be the best use of these dollars," as reported by TAPinto.
A local resident, Kurt Tiefenburn, also expressed concerns during the meeting, citing declining consumer confidence and potential changes to property tax laws in Tallahassee, according to Citizen Portal.
Mayor Scott Brook supported the grant, expressing optimism that the facelift could lead to further improvements in the mall, regardless of whether other businesses participate in the grants. This aligns with the program's aim to improve commercial property exteriors and potentially increase occupancy rates and property values.
Despite Commissioner Sarah's concerns about ensuring equitable opportunities for other potential applicants, the commission ultimately approved the grant.
