Crowds congregated to observe street boxing matches purportedly linked to cryptocurrency betting, as reported by Local 10. Joshua Pettus, an area resident, noticed individuals placing bets in crypto before two men squared off with boxing gloves for a half-hour brawl. The altercation escalated when a participant was knocked down and subsequently stomped on by bystanders, a scene Pettus described as unsafe.
Another local resident, Jeremy Pettus, was drawn to the commotion near Las Olas and witnessed a similar scenario. In a statement obtained by Local 10, he recounted how the participants' friends were "egging them on" amid screams and shouts. Fort Lauderdale Police responded to the incidents and were able to disperse the onlookers without further altercations. Jeremy Pettus urged tourists to respect the local community and laws, emphasizing the need for the cessation of violence and reckless behaviors.
Additional footage of the brawls was captured and shared by Joshua Pettus, highlighting the gravity of the situation with cellphone video evidence. "You see all these feet kicking the guy that's on the ground," Pettus told CBS News Miami, articulating his concern for the safety of those involved and the surrounding families. Police officers on ATVs promptly concluded the combat, but Pettus questioned the value of hosting Spring Break events if similar violent occurrences became commonplace.
Christine Portela, media relations and public outreach manager for Fort Lauderdale, reasserted the city's stance, emphasizing that the police force was present in full force along the beach. In an email statement to CBS News Miami, Portela confirmed that two situations had been defused without further issues and there had been "no reported or confirmed cases of betting." She continued, "This type of behavior will not be tolerated," and encouraged anyone witnessing disturbances to contact 911.
