Attorney General Kwame Raoul has secured a guilty verdict in a 2023 murder case from Vermilion County, as announced by his office. Jesse Landers, a 43-year-old man from Danville, was convicted of first-degree murder for the stabbing of John Carmean, aged 35, which took place on the streets of Danville.
The verdict came after witnesses heard Carmean identify Landers as his attacker before succumbing to his wounds. Found walking along a nearby road after the incident, the convict was eventually linked to the crime when the murder weapon, retrieved from a nearby alley and containing traces of blood from both the victim and Landers, was found according to the Attorney General's office.
"While nothing will change the events of that tragic day, it is my hope this verdict will provide some sense of closure for the families impacted by this senseless act of violence," Raoul said, reflecting on the case's conclusion. For Landers, the next court appearance is set for April 17, as the legal procedures continue.
Partnering with Jacqueline M. Lacy’s office, the Vermilion County State’s Attorney, the Attorney General’s office pressed for justice in this violent crime. "I would like to extend my gratitude to the jury, for their careful attention to the evidence and for delivering a guilty verdict in this case," Lacy said. "I would also like to extend my sympathies to the family of the victim for their heartbreaking loss." The prosecution team included Deputy Bureau Chief Jonathan McKay and Supervising Attorney Daniel Weiler from Raoul’s Criminal Prosecutions and Trials Assistance Bureau, along with Assistant State’s Attorney Jamison Gent.
