In Elgin's latest effort to unearth the truth behind a four-decades-old mystery, teams of divers plunged into the murky waters of Fox River on Monday. Their mission, a testament to persistence and hope, was to find any trace of Karen Schepers, a woman whose disappearance in 1983 has haunted the suburb's memory. The search, conducted in part by Elgin police and Chaos Divers, a nonprofit search and recovery team, aims to provide closure in a case that has long lacked answers, as per details provided by CBS News Chicago.

Schepers vanished after a night out celebrating a graduation at a bar in Carpentersville with co-workers on April 16, 1983, around 1 a.m. Little is known about her movements after she left as the last person from her group, and her yellow 1980 Toyota Celica also disappeared without a trace. Despite the passage of time, and the daunting prospect that key witnesses may no longer be alive, such as noted in an interview with WGN TV by Elgin Police Detective Matt Vartanian, "As you go back, you want to find people that were there that night, with cases this old, people end up dying. They are not around anymore, whether it is witnesses … so it’s been somewhat challenging to track people down for us."

The Elgin Police Department is not only harnessing the power of divers but has also turned to modern storytelling techniques to shine a light on cold cases like Schepers'. They've created a podcast titled "Somebody Knows Something," aiming to rekindle public interest and possibly lead to new information. Detective Vartanian reflected on the importance of the initiative in a statement to WGN TV, articulating the sentiment, “The family deserves to know what happened in many of these cases, we don’t know want these cases to be forgotten just because all these times goes by so that’s why we want to do that.”
