Tragedy struck on an eastbound stretch of I-80 in Tooele County on Wednesday night, when a semi-truck was involved in a single-vehicle accident. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, high winds are believed to quickly have turned lethal as they may have caused the blue semi, hauling a box trailer, to overturn into the median near mile marker 78 at approximately 9:58 pm.
The force of the wind and the resulting crash left the male driver dead and a female passenger seriously injured. She was subsequently transported by ground to receive urgent medical attention. While the exact chain of events is still under investigation, officials pointed out the dangerous conditions on the road, with the area known for its high winds posing significant risks for high-profile vehicles like semi-trucks.
Following the incident, the left lane of I-80 was closed to traffic, as emergency services and investigation teams worked through the night. The closure, lasting several hours, caused delays and rerouted traffic as the Utah Highway Patrol conducted their on-scene procedures. Motorists were urged to exercise caution and to be prepared for the unpredictable gusts that characterize this stretch of interstate.
The identities of the semi-truck driver and passenger have not been released as officials are still in the process of notifying next of kin. The Utah Highway Patrol has begun to thoroughly investigate to determine all contributing factors, and to conclusively verify whether or not the wind was the primary cause.
