
Tragedy struck this morning near Midway Airport when a two-vehicle crash resulted in the death of a man and left five others injured in Garfield Ridge. As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, the collision occurred around 3:25 a.m. on the 5600 block of West 55th Street. It was initiated when a Ford Fusion going east attempted to suddenly make a U-turn and struck a Hyundai Palisade that was traveling westbound.
The driver of the Fusion, a 28-year-old man, was rushed to Stroger Hospital but was later pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner's office had yet to disclose his identity. A 31-year-old woman also in the Fusion was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was listed in critical condition. FOX 32 Chicago details that the driver of the Palisade, a 29-year-old man, along with a 17-year-old girl who was a passenger, were also taken to Christ Hospital and were both in fair condition.
Two other passengers of the Palisade were affected by the crash. A 20-year-old woman was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center with her condition at that time being unspecified. Another woman, aged 32, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she too was described to be in fair condition, according to Chicago police.
The Chicago Police Major Accidents Investigations Unit was called in to thoroughly examine the crash. While they work to piece together the events that led up to the tragic incident, no further details or potential causes have been officially put forward yet.
