West Valley City in Utah is set to receive a transformative healthcare boost, thanks to a generous $75 million gift from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. As reported by At The U, the donation paves the way for an 800,000-square-foot state-of-the-art hospital and medical campus. This facility marks a significant expansion in healthcare accessibility for communities west of I-15, an area where only one in 10 hospital beds currently serve more than 725,000 residents.

The landmark investment will fund the building of the University of Utah's first off-campus hospital in its 175-year history. According to the University's announcement, the new medical campus will also be its largest multi-specialty health clinic. The clinic is slated to include 200 exam rooms and expects over 341,000 outpatient visits annually. "This groundbreaking investment continues the Eccles family’s extraordinary legacy of expanding health care access and education across Utah,” University of Utah President Taylor Randall said, as per At The U.

Health care disparities are a stark reality in West Valley City, where current data indicates residents can expect a life expectancy nearly 10 years lower than that of eastside communities. Moreover, westside residents face nearly twice the rate of heart disease-related deaths and significantly higher rates of diabetes and stroke compared to the eastside. The incoming medical campus, which also plans to feature a 90-bed hospital and specialized outpatient clinics such as orthopedics and women's health, aims to radically improve these conditions.

Beyond boosting local health care, the project is expected to spur economic growth by creating over 2,000 jobs within the West Valley area. "We’re thrilled to partner with the West Valley community to expand access to high-quality health care on the westside,” said Bob Carter, MD, PhD, CEO of the University of Utah Health, as obtained by At The U. The new campus is hailed as key to shrinking the doctor shortage in western Salt Lake County, currently five times greater than in other Wasatch Front communities.

Spencer F. Eccles, Chairman and CEO of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, remarked on the deep personal and foundation commitment to the well-being of the Salt Lake Valley community. In an interview with the University, Eccles expressed his hope that the new health campus will serve as a fundamental community resource for superior health care and expanded educational and economic opportunities. Construction of the health campus is expected to commence this summer, with the clinic completed in 2028 and hospital beds available by 2029.
