On the cusp of educational reform, Governor Tina Kotek rolled out a comprehensive plan aimed at enhancing the academic landscape of Oregon. With a focus on results and accountability, the 2025 Education Initiative is Kotek's strategy for bridging the gap between increased educational funding and student performance. In a statement made by the Governor's Office, Kotek expressed her resolve, "Getting public education right is one of the biggest promises we make to Oregonians. Students and families want a quality public education that works for them." She stressed that it's high time the state takes a sober look at the figures and collaborates with districts to raise the bar on student outcomes.
At the heart of this initiative is a bill that proposes revamping the current Oregon education accountability system, ensuring that the state's financial commitments are paralleled by high-caliber instruction in every classroom. Kotek's legislative plan comes alongside an unprecedented $11.36 billion State School Fund (SSF) investment, setting in motion a clearer pathway to fiscal predictability for school districts. "When schools aren’t delivering for students, we all have to step up," Governor Kotek said. "It’s time to be clear-eyed about our numbers and change how the state and districts work together on improving student outcomes," as stated by the Governor's Office.
The Governor's proposal is a multi-pronged approach aimed at ameliorating the education system. It builds on the Student Success Act's foundational metrics by introducing two new ones strongly tied to student success. The use of "interim assessments" will become standardized to track student growth throughout a school year, providing insight into effective teaching strategies and allowing for real-time pedagogical adjustments. Furthermore, schools will benefit from a streamlined process with the Oregon Department of Education identifying and reducing redundant reporting and programming.
