A high-speed pursuit that began with a hit-and-run in the South Bay culminated in the arrest of the driver after a crash in Hillcrest, close to the UC San Diego Medical Center. ABC 10News reports that the vehicle, a white Acura sedan, was involved in a collision earlier that morning on Interstate 805 near state Route 54 and was later spotted by San Diego County sheriff’s deputies in Chula Vista, who then attempted to stop the driver.
The chase escalated as the driver evaded attempts to pull over, and once crossing into San Diego city limits, San Diego Police officers took over the helm in the pursuit, the officers with the coordination intertwining like a dance of justice and desperation across the asphalt and it was during the early morning hours, the chase continued toward Hillcrest where it eventually ended in an unplanned detour into vegetation off Dickinson Street, behind the medical facility, as described by FOX 5 San Diego.
Chula Vista Police Department had received a prior call at 6:22 a.m. from a witness stating they saw the driver run a red light at East H Street and Paseo Del Rey, sharing that the driver had collided with their vehicle before fleeing the scene. Another victim reported a subsequent hit-and-run shortly after on westbound East H Street; this victim provided a plate number and vehicle description, which they relayed to authorities, setting off a series of alerts to local law enforcement.
Ultimately, the pursuit culminated near the 400 block of Dickinson Street, as the vehicle came to a grinding halt in a grassy area near Hillcrest Medical Center at UC San Diego Health and the SkyFox helicopter captured the scene showing officers and a K9 surrounding the vehicle, and the suspect being handcuffed and seated in the grass, according to footage from the scene as seen in the video at the top of this article provided by the local news outlet, although the identity of the driver was not immediately disclosed nor were the specific charges outlined at that time, following the suspect’s arrest, as per FOX 5 San Diego.
