A hunter tracking deer in a wooded area off Route 3 in Plymouth made a grim discovery earlier this month, finding what appeared to be a human skull. The bone, partly hidden beneath leaves and detritus on the forest floor, caught the hunter's eye on the morning of March 6, according to The Boston Globe. Initial assumptions about the skull being of animal origin were quickly dismissed upon closer inspection due to its distinctly human characteristics.
The hunter, who at the time was searching for deer antlers, reported the finding to Plymouth Police Department at around 9:30 a.m. Law enforcement responded and confirmed the remains were indeed human, lacking the nasal and jaw sections. As reported in a separate account by Boston 25 News, an extensive search operation was mounted along Route 3 on Thursday as part of the ongoing investigation.
The condition of the skull, described as green and weathered in the police report, indicates that the remains have been subjected to the elements for a considerable period. Shortly after the initial discovery, police deployed a cadaver dog to scour the surrounding area, though the report did not specify if any additional findings were made.
Both the State Police crime laboratory and state medical examiner’s office have assessed photos of the skull and believe it is likely human.Police stated that final confirmation will not be available until a complete forensic analysis is conducted.
