Indiana Governor Mike Braun has taken direct action to address the rise of antisemitism in educational institutions across the state. As reported by WTHR, on Friday, Gov. Braun signed an executive order to review policies at state colleges and universities in response to a "wave of antisemitism across the country" that reportedly began with a terrorist attack against Israel on October 7, 2023.
Gov. Braun's executive order targets not just the atmosphere at these institutions, but also offers a definitive stance from the state government. "With this executive order, we are making it clear that Indiana will not tolerate antisemitic discrimination at our state institutions or anywhere else — Jewish Hoosiers should know the state of Indiana condemns antisemitism and stands with them,” Braun stated, according to a WTHR report.
Details on the commencement and conclusion of the reviews have not been articulated. However, it is known that the Indiana Commission for Higher Education is to carry out the evaluations, as per info from WISHTV. This move comes within days of the U.S. Department of Education's announcement which identified Indiana University and 59 other universities under investigation for their alleged failure at protecting Jewish students. Institutions have been warned about possible "potential enforcement actions" if they fail to adhere to the Trump administration’s interpretation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.
Executive orders on a variety of issues, including environmental policy, immigration, and healthcare, have been signed by Braun since his office tenure began in January. The actions taken against antisemitism in educational settings further this trend of directives. "A wave of antisemitism across the country began over a year ago with the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack against Israel, with universities often a the epicenter of these incidents," Braun said in a statement, as mentioned in a piece by FOX59. This latest order on antisemitism is part of Braun's broader legislative efforts aimed at addressing key issues within the state.
The consequences for schools that fail to comply with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act could be severe, with the Department of Education stating potential enforcement actions will be taken. This stern message to Indiana's higher education system highlights the federal government’s commitment to ensuring a non-discriminatory learning environment for all students, regardless of their religious background.
