In an emotive tribute to a local hero, the Indiana House of Representatives has thrown unanimous support behind a resolution, introduced by State Rep. Craig Haggard (R-Mooresville), to rename the bridge over Big Walnut Creek on U.S. Highway 231 in honor of the late Capt. James Baugh, as reported by Indiana House Republicans. Baugh, a Putnam County former sheriff and Vietnam veteran, made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, his death serving as a stark reminder of the costs intertwined with public service and the preservation of safety within our society.
It was back in 2004 that tragedy struck when Capt. Baugh, then responding to a routine call, lost control of his patrol vehicle and it overturned into the Big Walnut Creek tragically this would lead to his eventual death at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, as outlined by an emotional recollection from the source. Before a life dedicated to law enforcement, Baugh had honored his country in the skies over Vietnam as a U.S. Air Force serviceman, following which he upheld justice in Putnam County—enduring in the memory of its citizens as a symbol of the steadfast values he embodied throughout his extensive career.
"Capt. Baugh exemplified unwavering dedication to public safety and service through his 32 years with the Putnam County Sheriff's Department and as a Vietnam veteran," Haggard was quoted extolling Baugh's virtues in a statement outlined by Indiana House Republicans. The representative's resolution not only intends to immortalize Baugh's unwavering spirit but serves as a concrete symbol ensuring that the story of his sacrifice pierces the consciousness of future generations traveling the route he once patroled.
Before venturing into a life clad in the uniform of the law, Baugh walked the halls of Belle Union High School in Morgan County and after serving in the defense of his nation, found a new battleground protecting his community within the Greencastle Police Department before ultimately joining the Putnam County Sheriff's Department where he rose to serve as sheriff from the year 1975 to 1982 and the dedication that Baugh demonstrated through his climb to the rank of captain during his lauded 32-year tenure is envisaged to be cast in iron with the renaming of the bridge, the passing of Senate Concurrent Resolution 11 paving the path for this commemorative act through the unanimous approval of both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly, as chronicled by Indiana House Republicans' official statements. With the legislative process in motion, the onus now lays with the Indiana Department of Transportation to etch Capt. Baugh's legacy into the very infrastructure of the community he so faithfully served.
