The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has forecasted overcast skies and mild temperatures for early this morning, with humidity at a high of 93%. As the day progresses, residents should brace for scattered showers and possible severe thunderstorms, according to the latest NWS report. Temperatures are expected to peak near 73 degrees with gusts reaching up to 28 mph.
"Scattered showers before 2pm, then scattered showers and thunderstorms between 2pm and 5pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Some of the storms could be severe." warns the NWS. With a 60% chance of precipitation, Indianapolis could see rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch.
The outlook doesn't improve as the day turns into night, with 80% chances of showers and thunderstorms before giving way to isolated showers post-2am. Winds continue to hasten from the south southwest, and although temperatures will drop to around 43 degrees, the severity of the storms could pose risks to the area.
In preparation for potential flooding, the NWS has released a Hydrologic Outlook that addresses concerns for widespread flooding across central Indiana. "Multiple rounds of moderate to heavy rainfall over the next week will bring the potential for widespread flooding to central Indiana," states the Hydrologic Outlook. Rainfall of 1.5 to over three inches is anticipated over seven days, potentially leading to minor lowland river flooding early in the week and the possibility of moderate flooding as subsequent systems move through.
As the week unfolds, additional thunderstorms are on the agenda, some of which may be strong or severe. The hazardous weather may extend through the week, impacting a broad swath of central Indiana. The NWS' Hazardous Weather Outlook states that "Spotter activation is likely this afternoon and evening." Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates for further information and to prepare for the upcoming adverse weather conditions.
